Anal Sex Law Change in Queensland

A change in sex law in Queensland means the state has finally caught up with the rest of the country.

Currently, the legal age of consent for vaginal sex is 16, but anal sex remains illegal until the age of 18, and is still referred to as sodomy under the Criminal Code.

Young gay men have previously felt discriminated against, and have had issues seeking safe sex information, with health care practitioners obligated to inform those asking about the illegality of the act.

Queensland is the only jurisdiction in Australia where the ages of consent are different.

Health Minister Cameron Dick said:

“By making this change, we’re addressing the disparity between the age of consent for penetrative sex, which has resulted in adverse consequences for young people in this state.”
