The First Female Monk in Thailand, Venerable Dhammananda Bikkhuni

by admin on December 20, 2017

Under Thai law, females are not allowed to be ordained as a monk. That was not the case for for Ven. Dhammananda who despite opposition went overseas to Sri Lanka to become ordained and started her own monastery in Nakhom Pathom, Thailand.

The Thai government and male monasteries do not recognize the Thai female monasteries and as a result they receive little to no funding, mainly relying on donations. The past 17 years have seen Ven. Dhammananda’s movement increase to 240 female monks currently residing in Thailand.

Watch the interview with ThaiLawForum for more on her story here.
