Mama's
Falafel
This is the falafel place serving Israelis and interestingly
displays a prominent picture of Jesus Our Savior on
the wall. We quizzed the owner regarding whether she
used any MSG or processed sauces in her Israeli food
and she guaranteed that she only uses fresh spices
all prepared by herself. Mama's serves falafel and
other dishes on a plate with a salad, hummous and
french fries. The falafel was tasty as was the chicken
schnitzel.
Yunanese Cultural Center
This restaurant is on the road outside of town heading
to the waterfall and also the Pai Mountain Lodge (described
above). It is actually in the Jeen Haw village and
seems to be a new creation as I’ve never encountered
it before this year. The compound has a few stores
selling Yunanese knick-knacks, teas and herbs. The
restaurant is open-air and overlooks a valley with
fruit and vegatable groves. The food is Yunanese and
they offer MSG in 3 quantities - little, medium and
super-sized. We asked if they could do without MSG,
and, after checking with the kitchen, they said that
they could. The Yunanese cuisine is like other Chinese
food but more spicy and there seemed to be more emphasis
on local herbs and ingredients. Ity was pretty good.
Other attractions
There is plenty to do and see in Pai but we are lazy
book people and mainly hung around doing nothing but
reading and writing. One interesting diversion was
the Cinema Paradiso. This house has been converted
into a video-showing theatre with 34 separate rooms.
They have a really good selection of videos, with
many classic and some offbeat, avant-garde type of
films as well. We were expecting a tiny cramped room,
but the rooms were huge with a large screen monitor
and big soft comfy sofas. The walls were painted black
and the feeling is of being totally spoilt as you
watch in your private room.
