Hot! Shocking Order to Rape and Parade Women Naked in India

INDIA – Two sisters, aged 23 and 15, have been victim of a rape order by their village council, which has even seen Amnesty International step in to try and ensure their safety, reports Al Jazeera.

The unelected all male council in the state of Uttar Pradesh, have ordered the girls to be raped and paraded naked with their faces blackened as punishment after their brother eloped with a married woman.

The family have now fled to New Delhi for fears of their safety. Earlier this month, the elder sister filed a petition at India’s Supreme Court, asking for protection to return home.

The Supreme Court have ordered Uttar Pradesh to reply to the petition by 15 September, however one of the brothers told Amnesty International:

“After we went to the Supreme Court, the villagers are even more aggressive.”

Legal blogger Jonathan Turley had this to say on the subject of village councils such as the one in this case:

“The problem is that these “courts” are allowed to operate outside of the legal system in their imposition a mix of religious and cultural traditions. Because the Jats are politically powerful, the government looks the other way. It presumably cannot do so now. Indeed, in any nation committed to the rule of law, the entire council would be arrested on the basis for the torture allegation as well as other culprits.

The case also shows the continuing desperate plight of women in this tradition oriented Hindu nation. India stands at the crossroads. It must either turn its back on such practices based on ignorance and prejudice or abandon its impressive strides as a leading modern nation.”

The high instance of rape in India (statistics report that a woman is raped in the country every 20 minutes) have made regular headlines since 2012’s gang rape in Delhi that shocked the world.

Last year, Indian authorities banned Leslee Udwin’s documentary film ‘India’s Daughter’ on the topic of the infamous incident, a move which only seemed to gain it more publicity.

A recent attempt at tackling the problem is a crackdown of pornography websites.

China is also trying to reform rape laws. See recent stories here and here.
